Generic instruments in a synchrotron radiation facility

Abstract This paper explores the concept and levels of genericity different instruments, or beamlines, at a synchrotron radiation facility. We use conceptual tools from sociology science, bibliometrics data European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) publication database, enriched by Web Science. The sample size is 11,218 observations for period 1996 to 2018. combined set includes beamline name, available ESRF library which makes instrument-level analysis possible. operationalize instrument as disciplinary diversity in corpus related each with Herfindahl-based index theoretically supported generic instruments. As result, we gain quantitative insight into character well way scientific fields experimental instruments group align.
